Holiday Cottages at Start Point Lighthouse

In association with Trinity House and Rural Retreats

Start Point Lighthouse lies on one of the most stunning headlands on the South coast at the southern end of Start Bay in the South Hams, between Dartmouth and Salcombe.  It was designed in 1836, electrified in 1959 and automated in 1993.

There are two holiday cottages at Start Point – Beacon Cottage and Landward Cottage.

The lighthouse provides instant access to the South West coast path with invigorating walks in both directions along the coast and inland. A short walk in one direction takes you to the charming beach at Lannacombe whilst if you head off towards Dartmouth you can visit the ruined village at Hallsands or walk on further to Beesands or Torcross.  For sandy beaches, East Portlemouth, Slapton and Blackpool Sands are within a 20-minute drive of the lighthouse.

Start Point lies 4 miles from the main road via narrow country lanes. The final stretch is a half-mile private, walled, tarmac drive which runs along the side of the headland. The drive is shared with walkers, forming part of the South West Coast Path.

Notes

You are reminded that Start Point Lighthouse is an operational lighthouse and there is an electronic fog signal that operates automatically (ear plugs are provided in case conditions are misty).

While the cliff edge is fenced – for reasons of safety, no children under 11 years are allowed. Small babies are welcome.

Access roads to some of the lighthouse sites are narrow with limited passing places and, dependent on the season and site, there is the possibility of overhanging vegetation due to cutting restrictions during bird breeding seasons or other environmental reasons.

Guests should be aware that the lighthouses and equipment need regular and sometimes emergency maintenance. Therefore visits by maintenance staff may occur at any time during the year. However, staff will do their best to ensure guest privacy at all times.

Guests should note that, as well as walkers passing by the cottage on the coastal path, the lighthouse is open (subject to availability) to visitors from 10am-5pm Easter to October.
